`Dog': smoke, no fire and no new tricks

Firehouse Dog is the story of Rexxx, a superstar Hollywood pooch who falls out of an airplane into a truck filled with tomatoes, bonds with a motherless boy and becomes the mascot of a misfit bunch of firefighters who desperately need a hero.

Cute dog? Check. Troubled kid? Check. Jocular supporting cast? Check. Opportunities for great peril? Check. Silliness? Check.

Firehouse Dog (20th Century Fox) Starring Josh Hutcherson, Bruce Greenwood. Directed by Todd Holland. Rated PG. Time 111 minutes.
