The former chief of staff for Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales told told the Senate Judiciary Committee last week that Gonzales was deeply involved in the firing of eight federal prosecutors last year, adding that the final decision on whom to dismiss was made by Gonzales and President Bush's former counsel. That description appeared to be at odds with earlier statements by Gonzales that his involvement in the firings was limited.

?I don?t think the attorney general?s statement that he was not involved in any discussions of U.S. attorney removals was accurate.?
