Tanika White

A journalist for 12 years, Tanika White covers fashion and beauty for The Sun. Previously, she covered education. She graduated magna cum laude from Howard University in 1995, with a bachelor's degree in journalism. White looks at beauty from head to toe in this issue, with a piece about some stylishly dressed Baltimore-area women.

Tiesha Higgins

A Prince George's County resident, Tiesha Higgins worked as a full-time journalist for three years at the Gazette newspapers, covering politics, crime and business. Her coverage won second place for investigative reporting in the 2005 Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association Editorial Contest. This year, she took a hiatus from the newsroom to start an event-planning company. Her love of writing brought her to UniSun. For this issue, she writes about local connections to Broadway's The Color Purple.

Philana Patterson

Philana Patterson is a full-time freelance writer based in New York. She is an avid reader and has been a book-club member for more than 10 years. She also writes fiction in her spare time. She has worked for news organizations in New York, South Carolina and Virginia. She also was the interactive media editor at black enterprise.com In this edition of UniSun, she writes about what it's like to grow up biracial.

Karen Moody

Karen Moody aspires to return to her first love, journalism. In the meantime, she's an attorney. In her first-person essay, she writes about finding out about her family's heritage in Virginia.
