Sister Marie Augustine Dowling, a retired member of the mathematics department of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, died of cancer Wednesday at her order's motherhouse in the Woodbrook section of Baltimore County. She was 82.

Born Helen Marie Dowling in Baltimore, she was a 1942 graduate of Trinity Preparatory School in Ilchester and earned a mathematics degree from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and a master's degree from the Catholic University of America.

She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1944 and received the name Marie Augustine.

She taught at St. Mary High School in Annapolis and at Notre Dame Preparatory School until 1959, when she became an assistant professor at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, remaining there until her 2004 retirement.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Villa Assumpta, 6401 N. Charles St.

Survivors include a cousin, Sister Delia Dowling of Baltimore, also of the same order.
