Health newsletter available online

Learn to Live at Fifty-Plus, a newsletter from the Anne Arundel County Department of Health, explores dietary supplements and provides tips for evaluating their benefits.

It also examines low-fat diets, exercising without injury, smart ways to eat out and the dangers of secondhand cigarette smoke. There is also a list of community health resources.

Volunteers sought for senior aid

The county Department of Aging and Disabilities is seeking volunteers age 55 and older to work in various programs to aid seniors in the community.

Programs include tax assistance, nutrition sites, tutors and mentors in schools, as well as administrative support for state and county police.

Older drivers can have skills assessed

Volunteers at the Maryland Association of Highway Safety Leaders are offering drivers ages 60 and older a driving health inventory. The free assessments are meant to help older drivers recognize the loss of key driving skills.

This assessment is available through the Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie. Appointments are private and confidential.

AARP offers safe-driving course

AARP is offering a safe-driving course for local seniors. This two-day refresher is designed to help older drivers review driving rules and improve driving and accident-prevention skills.

Many insurance companies offer a discount on insurance premiums after completion of this course. Registration is required.

The course will be offered:

From 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. tomorrow and Friday at the Brooklyn Park Senior Center, 202 Hammonds Lane. 410-222-6847.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday and April 4 at the South County Senior Center, 27 Stepney's Lane, Edgewater. 410-222-1927.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 5 and 6 in the Fellowship Hall, Pasadena United Methodist Church, 61 N. Ritchie Highway, Pasadena. 410-787-1077.

There is a $10 fee, due at registration.

Call to schedule help with taxes

Anne Arundel County senior centers are taking appointments from residents who wish to meet with an income tax assistant. State and federal income tax returns will be electronically filed directly from the center.

This service is free but is limited to simple personal tax returns.
