Glenwood center offers chance to get fit

The Glenwood Community Center, operated by Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, offers fitness and weight areas, a three-lane walking and jogging track, and a gymnasium with two courts suitable for basketball, volleyball and other activities.

The center also features an arts-and-crafts activity room, a group exercise and dance room and meeting rooms that are available for parties, weddings and other rentals.

The center also offers personal training services and an individualized exercise program. A medical clearance form is required. Fees vary according to plan.

Massage therapy and reflexology are also to be offered. Appointments are available between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesdays. Prices range from $35 to $85.

The center, which opened Oct. 31 and hopes to attract patrons from Columbia as well as western Howard County, is at 2400 Route 97, Cooksville.

Dance classes for seniors slated

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor a Ballroom and Latin Line Dancing class, for senior citizens ages 55 and older, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 10 at Glenwood Community Center.

Beginners and experienced dancers are invited to dance to big-band sounds, oldies, Latin and pop. The dances are designed for solo dancing; steps and patterns can also be used for partner dancing. Couples and singles are welcome.

Participants should wear leather or smooth-soled shoes; sneakers and backless shoes are not appropriate. The cost is $28.

Help sought -- Humane Society of Washington County asks residents of Washington, Frederick and Howard counties to help with a rehabilitation effort for more than 70 horses impounded for neglect last year by the Humane Society of Washington County. La Leche -- La Leche League of Western Howard County, a chapter of the international organization, meets from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month at Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church, 12101 Linden-Linthicum Lane, Clarksville. HCYP scholarship -- Howard County Youth Program awards a $2,000 scholarship to a high school senior who has participated in a sports program sponsored by the organization. The scholarship, which is in its 14th year, commemorates the life of Christopher Kelly, who played baseball in the program. Kelly died in a bicycle accident. Benefit bingo -- A basket bingo to benefit the Howard County 4-H All Stars will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Mount Airy Fireman's Activity Building, Twin Arch Road, Mount Airy.
