Keysville road detours posted

Keysville Frederick County Road at the Monocacy River is closed to traffic after a structural failure of the wing wall.

Alternate detour routes have been posted.

As a result of the road closure and detour routes, the weight limit restriction for Roop Road will be temporarily removed. Carroll County will inspect the bridge periodically.

When the detour routes for Keysville Frederick County Road are removed, the weight restriction for Roop Road will continue.

Sykesville to hold elections May 1

Sykesville will hold town elections from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 1 at the Town House for three full-term (four-year) council seats.

Candidates must be town residents for at least one year, be registered voters in the town, and have a permanent residence in town.

Nominations will be taken at the town council meeting at 7 p.m. tomorrow. To be nominated, a motion must be made from the floor, seconded, and accepted by the nominee.

Nominees may sign a certification of acceptance in front of the clerk/treasurer before the close of the April 9 meeting.

The town office is taking voter registration until 4:30 p.m. April 2.

Shepherd's Shoppe opens tomorrow

The Shepherd's Staff will open the Shepherd's Shoppe at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the New Windsor State Bank branch in Taneytown, 222 E. Baltimore St.

The Westminster-based ministry will sell one-of-a-kind items, gifts, recycled treasures and teapots from the organization's "Products With a Mission" line.

The shop will be in a corner space on the first floor outside the lobby entrance.

Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays. Proceeds will help disadvantaged families and individuals.

Hampstead to hold elections May 8

Hampstead will hold elections for two town council seats and mayor from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 8 at town hall.

Residents interested in running for office must apply by April 9. Candidates must be at least 25 years old, have lived in the incorporated limits for the past year and must be registered voters.

The deadline to register to vote also is April 9.

`Firefighter Fantasy Weekend' planned

The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department in Carroll County will hold its annual "Firefighter Fantasy Weekend" April 13-15.

The purpose of the event is to give those 21 and older in the Sykeville-Eldersburg area a first-hand look at the volunteer fire department and its mission.

Participants sleep at the fire station, answer emergency calls with firefighters and participate in training exercises, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.

Gala a fundraiser for local charities

Westminster FallFest will hold its fifth annual spring gala fundraiser from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. April 14 at Martin's Westminster. The "black tie optional" event will feature a champagne reception, seated dinner, open bar and dancing to the Mood Swings music.

Door prizes totaling $1,000 and a silent auction will be included.

Tickets are $100. Proceeds from FallFest and the gala will go to Carroll Hospice, the Historical Society of Carroll County, Kiwanis Clubs of Westminster and Mission of Mercy.
