Kristine Rasmussen, 53

Reiki practitioner, artist, founder of cancer support group

Kristine Rasmussen, a Reiki practitioner and an artist, died of cancer Saturday at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The North Baltimore resident was 53.

Born and raised in Kingston, N.Y., Ms. Rasmussen attended the Art Institute of Chicago and earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Swarthmore College in 1979, the year she moved to Baltimore.

She had worked as a freelance illustrator of science textbooks and was a master practitioner and teacher of Reiki, a traditional Japanese healing technique.

Since 1999, she had worked in private practice at Ruscombe Mansion Community Health Center in Baltimore.

She was the founder of the Reiki Cancer Support Group at Spirit Works Resource Center in Lutherville.

Ms. Rasmussen also enjoyed gardening, and was devoted to the practice of Siddha Yoga, family members said.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Waldorf School of Baltimore, 4701 Yellowwood Ave.

Surviving are her parents, Harold S. and Patricia D. Rasmussen of Kingston; a brother, Harold D. Rasmussen of Kingston; a sister, Kayleen Trout of Woodsboro; several nephews; and a niece.
