A fling and a prayer

March 18, 2007

For a few moments yesterday, No. 1 seed Ohio State's national title hopes were on life support. The situation was so dire, the drama so over the top, it was like an episode of Grey's Anatomy during sweeps week. Greg Oden fouled out and was on the bench. The Buckeyes were trailing No. 9 seed Xavier by three, and there were less than 10 seconds left. But Ron Lewis (above) played the role of hero, burying a long three-pointer - over the outstretched arms of two defenders - with two seconds left to force overtime. Freshman Mike Conley Jr. was simply McDreamy from that point, scoring 11 points in the extra period to lift Ohio State, 78-71. And as it turns out, the Buckeyes' overtime victory was a harbinger of things to come.

It ain't over till it's overtime

Vanderbilt 78, Washington State 74: Derrick Byars scored 27 points, hit five three-pointers, blocked a critical shot and led the sixth-seeded Commodores in a double-overtime thriller that undoubtedly had fans' heart rates at dangerously high levels.

Pittsburgh 84, VCU 79: Levance Fields missed two free throws at the end of regulation, but atoned by hitting a three-pointer in overtime, and the Panthers made a full recovery after blowing a 19-point lead.
