`Grease': Which ones do you want?

March 18, 2007

Only six contestants -- and two episodes -- remain in You're the One That I Want, NBC's reality TV show in which contestants vie to be cast as the leads in a new Broadway production of the musical Grease.

National television exposure is rare for Broadway, and letting the public vote on casting its productions has never been done. But the TV show takes its lead from How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, a British program about casting a West End production of The Sound of Music.

In next week's A&E Today section, Sun theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck will talk to David Ian, the creative force behind both television shows. She'll also survey experts on the strategy of casting such a beloved show. And she'll tell you who the experts would pick if they were producing the musical.

We'd like to get your opinion, too, on who you think should be Broadway's next Sandy and Danny. (The last two episodes air tonight and next Sunday. We'll publish the poll results next Sunday in A&E Today.)

Here are the contestants who are still in the running: The Sandys

"Baby Sandy": Allie Schulz, 19, a ballroom dance studio clerk from Nashville, Tenn.

"Ballerina Sandy": Ashley Spencer, 21, a cocktail waitress from Massillon, Ohio.

"Small-town Sandy": Laura Osnes, 20, an actress who played "Sandy" in Minnesota. The Dannys

"Hot Danny": Austin Miller, 30, a former Days of Our Lives actor from Alvin, Texas.

"Wholesome Danny": Derek Keeling, 26, a waiter from Charleston, W.Va.

"Slacker Danny": Max Crum, 21, a gym receptionist from Phoenix.
