Marlins 4, Orioles 1

Not as sharp

Failing to find the command that enabled him to breeze through his first two starts, Daniel Cabrera was touched for four earned runs, including a mammoth three-run, third-inning home run by Miguel Cabrera, in four innings of the Orioles' 4-1 loss to the Florida Marlins yesterday at Roger Dean Stadium. In his two previous spring starts, Cabrera had given up just two hits and no walks spanning five innings. Yesterday, he walked three and needed 59 pitches. "Nobody can be perfect," he said. "I feel good. I got my work in. I threw four innings, 60 pitches. I feel good."

Cabrera times two

The Orioles' Cabrera and the Marlins' Cabrera appear to have a rivalry that started when the two stared each other down after the Dominican pitcher struck out the Venezuelan third baseman in the World Baseball Classic last year. Daniel Cabrera has said that there is no bad blood between the two, and they did have what appeared to be a good-natured conversation behind the batting cage before yesterday's game. But that doesn't mean that they are the best of friends, either. Asked yesterday how good a hitter Miguel Cabrera was, Daniel Cabrera said, "I don't know." When pressed, he said again, "I don't know how good of a hitter he is."

No offense

The Orioles scored five or more runs in four of the first five exhibition games, but the offense has slumbered since then. During the past five games, the Orioles are averaging a little more than two runs. Yesterday, Brian Roberts led off the game with a single, but the Orioles didn't get another hit until the seventh inning.

On deck

Right-hander Jaret Wright will make his third exhibition start today at Fort Lauderdale Stadium opposite Florida Marlins left-hander Scott Olsen. Scott Williamson, Jamie Walker and John Parrish are also scheduled to pitch today.
