March 14, 2007|By GARY LAMBRECHT

No. 3 Johns Hopkins (3-1) Coming up -- At No. 4 Syracuse, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. Comment -- One of the sport's biggest rivalries continues, and history says it should be close. The past six games at the Carrier Dome have been decided by one goal, including two in overtime.

No. 6 Navy (5-0)

Coming up -- Vs. Holy Cross, Saturday, Dallas, 1 p.m.; vs. Colgate, Wednesday, 4 p.m.

Comment -- The schedule will ramp up at the end of the month, but the Midshipmen are taking care of lesser opponents handily with excellent defense and great faceoff play from William Wallace and Mikelis Visgauss.

No. 10 Maryland (4-2)

Coming up -- Vs. No. 18 UMBC, Saturday, 1 p.m.; vs. Mount St. Mary's, Tuesday, 3 p.m.

Comment -- How shaky is Maryland's offense? Freshman long-stick midfielder Brian Farrell (Boys' Latin), one of the more skilled defenders to join Division I, is one of the Terps' top scorers.

No. 13 Loyola (2-2)

Coming up -- Vs. St. John's, Saturday, 1 p.m.

Comment -- Coming off its huge, comeback win against formerly top-ranked Duke, the Greyhounds need to beat visiting St. John's and Massachusetts before Syracuse comes to town.

No. 14 Towson (2-1)

Coming up -- At No. 2 Virginia, Saturday, 1 p.m.; vs. Ohio State, Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Comment -- The Tigers are just 4-for-20 in extra-man chances. On the flip side, freshman Eric Boyle and sophomores Justin Schneider and Randall Cooper are playing like older guys, with 20 points among them.

No. 18 UMBC (3-2)

Coming up -- At No. 10 Maryland, Saturday, 1 p.m.

Comment -- The youngsters are growing up fast. Freshman attackman Cayle Ratcliffe has needed just 14 shots on goal to score his team-leading 12 goals. Freshman midfielder Kyle Wimer has nine points.

Mount St. Mary's (0-3)

Coming up -- Vs. Marist, Saturday, 1 p.m.; at No. 10 Maryland, Tuesday, 3 p.m.

Comment -- After losing to Delaware, Bucknell and Virginia in its typically tough, early, nonconference schedule, the Mount has a chance to win its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener against Marist.
