UMBC women reach title game for 1st time

Vestal, N.Y. -- Amanda Robinson scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lift seventh-seeded UMBC to a 67-56 win over third-seeded Vermont in the semifinals of the America East tournament yesterday.

The Retrievers (15-16) advanced to the championship game for the first time and became the third No. 7 seed to reach the America East title game.

In the championship, today at 5 p.m., the Retrievers will face top-seeded Hartford, which beat fourth-seeded Binghamton, 56-46, in the other semifinal.

The Catamounts (19-12) led 28-27 at halftime, but Robinson scored 17 of her 21 points in the second half, including a jumper with 15:42 to go that put UMBC ahead for good. The Retrievers outscored Vermont 40-28 in the second half.

Sharri Rohde and Brittnie Hughes each scored 12 points for the Retrievers.
