UMBC women reach America East semis

Vestal, N.Y. -- Brittnie Hughes scored 21 points and Sharri Rohde added 17 to lead seventh-seeded UMBC over Stony Brook, 67-64, in yesterday's America East quarterfinals.

With their first conference tournament win, the Retrievers (14-16) advance to face Vermont, a 70-57 winner over Maine, in today's semifinal at 5 p.m. at the Binghamton University Events Center.

The Seawolves (18-11) took a 16-5 lead after six minutes, and the teams traded field goals for the next five minutes, with Stony Brook maintaining its 11-point lead that was 25-14 with 8:42 to play.

But UMBC scored nine straight and ended the period on a 16-2 run for a 33-27 lead at halftime.

Stony Brook scored the first six points of the second half to tie the game and took a 37-35 lead on two free throws by America East Player of the Year Mykeema Ford four minutes later.

The Retrievers did not score a field goal until Hughes hit a jumper with 9:53 remaining, sparking a 9-0 run that gave UMBC a 46-41 lead at the 7:32 mark. Hughes scored UMBC's first 11 points of the half, tying the game with a layup, then hitting a go-ahead three-pointer.

Senior Jessica Smith scored nine of the Seawolves' next 10 points to tie the game at 51 with 2:15 to play, but Rohde made a layup 26 seconds later to put the Retrievers on top for good.
