Boy, 15, guilty of murder

March 10, 2007

Devon Richardson, who was 14 when he was charged with fatally shooting a 67-year-old woman in Northeast Baltimore last year, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder yesterday in a deal that could bring him a maximum of 20 years in prison with 10 years suspended, the city state's attorney's office said.

Richardson, 15, shot Janice Letmate in the head with a .22-caliber rifle as she was walking home from a bus stop in the Waltherson neighborhood in September.

Police at the time called the slaying a "senseless tragedy" and said there did not appear to be any conflict between the two and that Letmate was not robbed.

Letmate worked as a receptionist for a downtown law firm.

According to court testimony, Richardson was not in school on the day of the incident, prosecutors said.

Richardson, who lived on the 5100 block of Belair Road, is scheduled to be sentenced May 3 by Baltimore Circuit Judge Wanda K. Heard.
