S. Florida dangerous for turtles of any kind

The city of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is modifying four streetlights because baby sea turtles become disoriented by the colored lights and crawl toward them instead of the ocean after hatching on the beach.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found that the lights were the cause of multiple incidents of hatchlings dying in intersections and storm drains.

The animal-lover in me is happy that Floridians care this much about their turtles.

The sports fan in me hopes that the Miami Hurricanes are as concerned about the well-being of the Maryland Terrapins today when they meet in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament today in Tampa.
