Dr. Charles Patterson McCausland, a retired Towson dentist who was active in area civic affairs, died of heart failure Feb. 28 at "Melinda," his Worthington Valley home of 43 years. He was 91.

Born in Canton, Pa., and raised in Hamilton in Baltimore, he graduated from City College in 1932 and the University of Maryland Dental School in 1938.

He established his practice in the late 1930s on West Pennsylvania Avenue in Towson, where he cared for generations of patients until retiring in 1982.

He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and became a captain while serving stateside with its Dental Corps.

Dr. McCausland was a member of the Baltimore City Dental Society and a founding member and former president of the Baltimore County Dental Association.

He was a former president and member for more than 20 years of the Maryland Board of Dental Examiners and had been an examiner for the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners.

Dr. McCausland was a member for 50 years and twice served as president of the Towson Rotary Club. He was a former board member of the Towsontown Association and Friends of the Towson Library, and had been a founder of the old Chesapeake National Bank of Towson.

Dr. McCausland enjoyed spending time at "Massum Eyrie," his St. Mary's County tobacco farm overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, and fishing for rockfish.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 65 Sacred Heart Lane, Glyndon, where a memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday.

His wife of 57 years, the former Helen Ross Zimmerman, died in 1997.

Surviving are two sons, Charles P. McCausland III of Cockeysville and Ross McCausland of Glyndon; two daughters, Katharine Z. Foster of Queenstown and Helen S. Byrnes of Roland Park; and 11 grandchildren. Another daughter, Martha McCausland, died in infancy.
