Bowie State falls in CIAA semifinals

Charlotte, N.C. -- Elizabeth City State defeated Bowie State, 59-54, in the semifinals of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball tournament at Bobcats Arena last night.

Bowie State (19-9) was led by Gil Goodrich with 16 points and six rebounds. Tyronne Beale had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Elizabeth City State led by seven in the first half, but the Bulldogs battled back and took a 27-24 lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs cut the Vikings' lead to 53-52 on Joshua Johnson's layup with 3:16 remaining, but Elizabeth City State outscored the Bulldogs 6-2 in the remaining minutes.

Johnson finished with 14 points.

Bowie State shot 31.6 percent (6-for-19) at the free-throw line, compared with Elizabeth City State's 52.6 percent (10-for-19).

Elizabeth City State is 14-15.

The Vikings will meet top-seeded Virginia Union, which beat St. Augustine's, 55-53, in tonight's championship game at 8 o'clock.

The three-time defending champion Panthers (21-4) held the Falcons (19-9) to 31 percent shooting, but won despite shooting 48.1 percent from the free-throw line and committing 21 turnovers.
