The Week Ahead

February 28, 2007|By Gary Lambrecht

No. 5 Maryland (2-1)

Coming up -- Vs. No. 3 Duke, Friday, 7:30 p.m., Byrd Stadium

Comment -- Whether senior G Har ry Alford returns from a shoulder in jury or freshman G Brian Phipps plays, Duke A Matt Danowski and A Zack Greer will apply the pressure.

No. 8 Johns Hopkins (0-1)

Coming up -- Vs. No. 1 Princeton, Saturday, noon, M&T Bank Stadium; at No. 19 UMBC, Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Comment -- The Blue Jays haven't been 0-2 since 1971. To avoid it, they must solve Princeton's Alex Hewit, the reigning NCAA Goalie of the Year.

No. 9 Navy (2-0)

Coming up -- Vs. No. 16 North Caro lina, Friday, Navy-Marine Corps Me morial Stadium, 7 p.m.

Comment -- The Midshipmen have owned Carolina in recent years. This time, the 3-0 Tar Heels might change that tune.

No. 12 Towson (1-0)

Coming up -- Vs. Molloy, Saturday, 7 p.m., Unitas Stadium

Comment -- The Tigers scrambled to find an opponent to replace But ler, which dropped men's lacrosse. They had to settle for a Division II school.

No. 19 UMBC (1-0)

Coming up -- Vs. Air Force on Satur day, 1 p.m., vs. No. 20 Denver on Sun day, 3:30 p.m., both games in Denver; vs. No. 8 Johns Hopkins, Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Comment -- Playing games on back-to-back days in a mile-high altitude is not the best way to confront a quick turnaround and a test against Hop kins.

Loyola (0-2)

Coming up -- At Penn State, Satur day, 1 p.m.

Comment -- The Greyhounds need to get better against another 0-2 school in the ECAC. With one fourth-quarter goal in 2007, Loyola also needs to finish better.

Mount St. Mary's (0-0)

Coming up -- Vs. No. 10 Delaware, Tuesday, 1 p.m.

Comment -- Before they can score, the Mountaineers need to win some battles against Blue Hens faceoff ace Alex Smith. Easier said than done.
