Girl, 12, critical after being hit by police car

A 12-year-old girl was in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night after being struck by a police car in West Baltimore, a department spokesman said.

Sgt. Daniel Salefski, a 16-year veteran of the department, was on routine patrol and driving southbound in the 500 block N. Gilmor St. about 2.55 p.m. yesterday when his vehicle struck the girl, said Agent Donny Moses, the spokesman. Witnesses said the girl was playing on the sidewalk with friends and then ran into the street from behind a parked van, Moses said.

"The sergeant said he never saw her coming and was unable to prevent hitting her," Moses said.

Moses said the girl's family had asked police not to release her name to the public.

The incident is being investigated, Moses said.

18-year-old is fatally shot

An 18-year-old man was fatally shot last night in West Baltimore, police said. Police were called to the 1600 block of McKean Ave. about 8:50 p.m., according to Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman. There they found Antonio Harris, 18, whose last known address is the 1000 block Bentalou St., with several wounds in the upper torso and head. Harris was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead. Moses said police know of no suspects or motive.


Police probe woman's shooting

An unidentified woman was in critical condition last night at Sinai Hospital after being shot, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman. The woman was shot at least once in the abdomen about 5 p.m. yesterday while sitting in a car in the 5300 block of Beaufort Ave., Moses said.


Lane closure on Pratt Street stretch

Pratt Street will be reduced to one lane between Paca and Howard streets from 7 a.m. today to 5 p.m. tomorrow so that work crews can assemble a crane at the Convention Center hotel construction site, according to city transportation officials.

Lane reduction today on Calvert St.

City transportation officials are planning to reduce a portion of Calvert Street to one lane this morning from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The lane reduction - from Pratt Street to Lombard Stret - is for a construction project.


School board to meet on closings

Baltimore's school board is planning to meet at 1 p.m. Monday at 1 p.m. to discuss recommendations for school closings. The meeting is set for Room 301 at the Alice Pinderhughes Administrative Building, 200 E. North Ave. No public comment will be allowed during the meeting. The board is scheduled to vote on the school closings proposal at its meeting Tuesday night.
