Sports Hall of Fame nominations sought

Nominations are invited for Howard County's Community Sports Hall of Fame, sponsored by the county's Department of Recreation and Parks.

The honor recognizes those who have gained prominence or made substantial contributions as athletes, coaches, managers, officials or behind-the-scenes contributors to community recreational sports in the county.

Nominees must have been Howard County residents or have been involved in community sports in Howard County during the time they made a contribution to community sports.

Nomination forms are available from the Department of Recreation and Parks (410-313- 4711), at library branches or online at www.howardcounty Nominations must be postmarked by March 15, and mailed or delivered to Recreation and Parks Community Sports Hall of Fame, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia 21046-1677.

The Hall of Fame is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at Department of Recreation and Parks Headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.

Open house to honor CA and its president

The accomplishments of the Columbia Association, its president, Maggie J. Brown, senior staff and team members will be celebrated at a Community Open House from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Loft of The Other Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center.

The association's mission is to enhance quality of life for people living and working in Columbia and to ensure that it is an open, integrated and caring community.

The Columbia Association offers recreational, cultural and community services, including an art center, a teen center, before- and after-school care, summer camps, concerts, an archive, volunteer center and exchange program with sister cities in France and Spain. The association offers sports and recreational facilities, and maintains open space that includes lakes, parks, tot lots and bike trails.

The open house is sponsored by Friends of CA. Refreshments will be served and admission is free.

Board, council meeting today

The quarterly meeting of the Board of Education and the County Council has been rescheduled for 8:15 a.m. today.

The meeting is being held in Boardroom B at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

Help is available finding child care

Free assistance is available to Howard County parents seeking state-licensed child-care centers, family child-care providers, programs for school-aged children and preschools.

The service, called LOCATE: Child Care, is available from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays at 410-313-1930. Trained child-care counselors are available to assist parents in identifying child care best suited to the parents' needs, preferences and ability to pay.

A service of the Department of Citizen Services' Howard County Child Care Resource Center, the program also helps parents find programs for which they can qualify, such as subsidized health care, subsidized child care and tax credits.

Beekeeping course set for next month

The Howard County Beekeepers Association will offer a short, practical beekeeping course at 7 p.m. March 6, 13, 20 and 27 at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship.

Discussion will focus on handling bees safely, their importance for the food supply, pollination and honey production. Family participation is encouraged.

`Green' renovations workshop scheduled

The Green Building Institute, 7761 Waterloo Road, Jessup, will offer a workshop, "Introduction to Green Home Renovations," from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Participants will learn about integrated design, heating and cooling, energy audits, passive solar, green materials and challenges related to green renovations.

The cost is $99 for members; $130 for nonmembers.

Benefit magic show slated for tomorrow

The Magic of Shawn Anthony will present "Seeing is Believing" at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Slayton House Theatre on Wilde Lake Village Green. Anthony, a performance artist, has won many awards.

Tickets are $20; $10 for children to age 12. A portion of the proceeds will benefit cancer research.

Karaoke event has been postponed

The Columbia Association Middle School Advisory Committee's Karaoke Extravaganza for middle school students, originally scheduled from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. today at Columbia Teen Center, has been postponed. A new date has not been set.
