A '60s sound

The lowdown -- Even in this day and age, quirky pop and soul melodies of 1960s records still exist -- through bands like the Dansettes. Check out this trio of female vocalists and backing band, named after a coveted brand of phonographs from the same era, at the Ottobar on Saturday. The Swingin' Swamis and DJ Matt Walter open.

Funny man

The lowdown -- Paul Mecurio has already proven that he can write for the best in comedy, such as Jay Leno and Jon Stewart. Before he won an Emmy and a Peabody award for his contributions to The Daily Show, Mecurio wrote jokes for The Tonight Show while also juggling a career in mergers and acquisitions law. Now, see what Mecurio has to offer as a headliner at the Baltimore Comedy Factory tonight through Saturday.

Afro-Brazilian carnival

The lowdown -- This weekend, get a taste of Afro-Brazilian culture at the !Viva Brasil! carnival, hosted by Creative Alliance at the Patterson. Tomorrow at 8 p.m., catch a screening of A Cidade Das Mulheres (City of Women), a documentary of Brazil's matriarchal culture. Samba the night away at a dance party Saturday, with a free lesson starting at 8 p.m. The celebration concludes 2 p.m.-6 p.m. Sunday with a presentation of capoeira, a Brazilian dance that incorporates martial arts moves.
