Postcard From Srping Training

During my quest to find someplace to watch yesterday's Maryland-Clemson game, I also found one of the biggest Maryland sports fans on earth, though 40-year-old Verizon supervisor Allen File - oddly enough - hails from Richmond, Va.

You'd never have known it from the "Fear the Turtles" T-shirt and the story he told of driving all the way to Kansas City to see Cal Ripken's 3,000th hit.

"He ended up getting it in Minnesota," File said. "but I had to get back to work, so I just drove home. I'm going to Cooperstown this year to see good old Cal. I'm basically a die-hard fan."

By the way, Allen finally cleared up the mystery of his Mid-Atlantic allegiances before he headed out of Champps. He spent his boyhood in Randallstown, but claims his father moved the family out of the Baltimore area in 1979 after the Orioles lost the World Series.

"I guess he was pretty disappointed," File said.
