Roch Around The Clock

Props to outfielder Jay Payton for saying all the right things when it comes to the Orioles' signing of Aubrey Huff, which will significantly cut into his playing time.

"I pretty much knew, even when they signed me, that they were probably going to go out and get another guy," Payton said. "I know I'm not going to start 162 games, but I know my play is going to dictate how much playing time I get. And well it should. That's the way it works in this game."

Here's a little more from Payton:

"I know just about everybody in here, to some degree. I've probably played with half-a-dozen guys in here, so it's not too bad for me."

And this, when asked if he's more excited to be here because it's a new team:

"I get the same kind of excitement every year. I look forward to the season starting. It's just nice to get down to spring training and get things underway. I think most of these guys in here are pretty excited every year. It doesn't matter where they are. It's just nice to get in and try to learn the ropes."

The main field and two back fields were used for the pitchers' fielding practice Friday, and Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo somehow kept appearing on each one.

Every time I looked up, he was there. The man has fantastic range.

I forgot how tall James Hoey is. He's listed at 6 feet 6. He also moves like a newborn giraffe. It's like he's still getting used to his height.

An Orioles official says reliever John Parrish has one minor league option left, which comes as quite a surprise. It seems like he's been with the club for 10 years now.

Then again, he's had so many surgeries, it's hard to get an accurate count.

Asked about the option, Parrish smiled and said, "I have no idea. That's what agents are for."
