Friends of Patapsco prepare for `Winter Feast'

Friends of the Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway Inc. and Patapsco Valley State Park will sponsor "A Winter's Feast," a family program that includes a picnic in a shelter, songs and stories about winter, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. March 4 in Hollofield Pavilion No. 300 of the park.

Food and beverages will be served, and guitarist and singer Sam "Muleman" Miller will provide the music. Visitors can roast marshmallows and share memories, play games and take a short hike to the Patapsco River.

Each family is asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Boy Scout Troop 432 will grill the burgers.

Registration begins at 2:30 p.m. Music begins at 3 p.m., and food is served at 4 p.m.

The cost is $5; $15 a family. Registration is requested by March 2.

Junior firefighters to sponsor dance

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's junior firefighters will sponsor a St. Patrick's dance, for ages 9 to 15, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 10 at the firehouse, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge.

Tickets, available only at the door, are $8.

MOMS Club to meet Wednesday

The MOMS Club of Elkridge, a support group of stay-at-home mothers, will meet at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Elkridge Baptist Church, 5929 Setter Drive.

A speaker will describe Maryland savings plans for college. Baby-sitting will be available at the church.

Club members meet at parks, movies, museums and other venues for conversation and support. Children are always welcome, and form friendships within the group.

Scholarships -- Elkridge Adult Athletic Association is accepting applications for its 2007 scholarship program for high school seniors. Applications are available at area high schools. Danny Tracy, 410-796-4389.

Learning English -- The Miller branch library offers an English Conversation Club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.

Elkridge library -- The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, offers Games Night for those ages 11 to 17 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

A parent-child book club for those ages 11 to 17 with a parent will be offered from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month. Registration is not required.

Chess is available for those ages 11 to 17 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all skill levels are welcome but must know how to play. Registration is not necessary.

Help with homework will be available for those ages 11 to 14 at the library. Snacks will be provided, and registration is requested. 410-313-5077.

Mah-jongg -- Drop-in mah-jongg games are held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center. Admission is free.

A new duplicate bridge drop-in group meets from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays at the center. Coffee, tea and treats will be available. Admission is free. 410-313-7279.

Knitting for charity -- A community-service knitting and crocheting group meets to knit and crochet afghans, blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center. 410-313-7279,

High tea -- Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park will offer a Victorian Mother-Daughter high tea in the parlors of Mount Ida, the visitor center of the once-renowned girls school in Ellicott Mills - now Ellicott City. The event will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 25. Hostesses in period dress will serve tea and desserts. The halls and parlors display furnishings, art and garments appropriate to the girls' school. Tap dancing -- Tap dancing classes are to begin at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. March 2. The class, which is limited to 15 students, will be taught by Jackie Dunphy of Golden Girls & Company, a seniors tap dance troupe. The cost is $20 for six weeks of classes. School registration -- Hollifield Station Elementary School will hold registration for kindergarten and first grade for the 2007-2008 school year from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 5-9. Evening registration will be available until 7:30 p.m. March 6. Parents or legal guardians should take a copy of their lease or deed and a second proof of residency; birth certificate or passport; immunization records; a parent photo identification. Basket bingo -- Hollifield Station Elementary School will hold its fourth basket bingo at 7 p.m. March 16 at the school, 8701 Stonehouse Drive, Ellicott City.
