Ken Shuman writes from Baltimore, asking about water temperatures. "On Saturday (Feb. 10) the water temp for the Chesapeake Bay was reported at 28 degrees F. Shouldn't that have been `ice temp' since water freezes at 32 degrees?" he asks. Not necessarily. The bay is brackish - more or less salty, depending on location, tides and runoff. Salt lowers the freezing point of ocean water to 28.4 degrees. Bay water may be liquid between 28 and 32. If it's frozen at Tolchester Beach, we report "ice."
