Franks, David Ardell

After a courageous battle with gastric cancer, DAVID A. FRANKS was called to be with God on Thursday, February 8, 2007. Born in 1929 in Washington, DC, David was the second child of David R. and Lela Franks. He was raised and educated in Washington and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1947. In 1951 he earned a BS degree from Howard University, majoring in mathematics with a minor in physics. He earned a MS degree in mathematics from Howard University in 1952 and received a fellowship from the University of Illinois to continue his graduate studies in its doctoral program. He interrupted his studies to serve in the United States Army from 1953 to 1957 in its guided missile program in Huntsville, AL, after which he worked for Westinghouse Corporation as a mathematician and Software Development Manager until his retirement in 1991. He is survived by Erta W. Franks, his wife of 53 years; a son, Dr. Bryan Franks; daughter-in-law Dr. Debra Hayek; a daughter, Kathleen Franks; a son-in-law, Hakim Rushdan; four grandchildren, Ariel, David and Theodore Franks and Taj Rushdan; three step-grandchildren, Munir, Rashad and Tariq Rushdan; a sister, Lillie Gravely; a brother-in-law, Joseph Douglass and a host of other relatives and friends. On February 17 at 10 A.M. a viewing will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, 5501 Silver Hill Road, Forrestville, MD. the funeral will immediately follow at 11 A.M.
