Music 'N' Motion for children set Feb. 23

Lively Arts for Little Ones! - which offers live performances for children ages 2 to 5 and their chaperones, will present Tracey Eldridge with Music 'N' Motion at 10 a.m. Feb. 23 at The Other Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place.

The show lasts 45 minutes. Tickets are $4.50 for children ages 2 and older and adults. Group rates are available.

Steiner exhibits his oil paintings

Robert Steiner, a member of the Howard County Art Guild and a retired member of the chemistry and biochemistry faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is exhibiting his oil paintings at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, through March 1.

Steiner's work also will be shown at Columbia Center for the Healing Arts, 10450 Shaker Drive from March 1 through May 1. Viewing times are from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Karaoke program at teen center Feb. 23

The Columbia Association Middle School Advisory Committee will sponsor a Karaoke Extravaganza for middle school students from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Columbia Teen Center, 5853 Robert Oliver Place.

The event is open to all aspiring performers. Door prizes and games are also planned.

Admission is $3. Individuals and groups are welcome.

Jackie Robinson -- In celebration of African-American History Month, the east Columbia library will sponsor a program on Jackie Robinson, major league baseball's first African-American player and a member of its Hall of Fame. "Two Sides of Jackie Robinson: Pioneer in Baseball and Civil Rights Advocate," which will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow, is to include slides and other materials from the collection of the National Archives. Registration is required.

The library invites teenagers to share ideas for transforming its teen area, which is in need of redesign. Those ages 12 and older are invited to have snacks and share ideas from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the library. Registration is required.

"Science Saturday," a program of science demonstrations and hands-on activities for children ages 7 to 10, is scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday Feb. 17 at the library. "3-2-1 Blast Off!" (laws of motion and the science of rocketry) will be the theme. 410-313-7700.

Beginning bridge -- "Bridge for the Absolute Beginner" will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. The six-week class costs $60, plus $5 for a textbook. A drop-in bridge program is offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the same location. Players at all levels are welcome. Lessons in mah-jongg are also offered. The cost is $31 for three classes. Registration is required. 410-290-5430.

La Leche to meet -- La Leche of Columbia will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Owen Brown Community Center. The group offers support and guidance to breast-feeding mothers. Baby-sitting class -- Columbia Teen Center will offer its "Baby-sitting Made Easy" class for those ages 11 to 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at The Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center. First aid, emergency procedures, age-appropriate activities and other skills will be taught through hands-on activities. A certificate is awarded. How to succeed -- Long Reach Community Association will offer a six-week session of classes for boys and girls, ages 8 to 13, in etiquette, social skills and manners. The classes are presented by Stepping Out and meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, through March 17, at Stonehouse in Long Reach Village Center, 8775 Cloudleap Court. Registration is open until Saturday. The cost is $150 for six weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property.

Also offered are Ballet with Cindee Velle for children ages 3 and older and adults, through March 24. Classes include "First Steps," "Pre-ballet," "Combination Classes" and "Classical Ballet" as well as jazz, tap, pointe, hip-hop and modern dance.

Belly dancing for adults is offered through March 12. Beginners will meet from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.; the advanced class from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $64 for eight weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property. 410-730-8113.

Stamp your own -- Oakland Mills Community Association will sponsor a session of Stamping with Gina, a chance to produce handmade greeting cards with a professional look, using stamping techniques, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at The Other Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place.
