Hollifield Station to hold registration

Hollifield Station Elementary School will hold registration for kindergarten and first grade for the 2007-2008 school year from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 5-9. Evening registration will be available until 7:30 p.m. March 6.

Parents or legal guardians should take a copy of their lease or deed and a second proof of residency (an original utility, cable or water bill); birth certificate or passport; immunization records (unless they wish to apply for a religious exemption); a parent photo (driver's license, military identification or passport).

The child must be 5 years old by Sept. 1. 2007.

Tap dancing at senior center

Tap dancing classes are to begin at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. March 2. The class, which is limited to 15 students, will be taught by Jackie Dunphy of Golden Girls & Company, a seniors tap dance troupe.

The cost is $20 for six weeks of classes. A recital is planned.

Teens can work on newsletter

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will hold a meeting for teens interested in working on its new online newsletter, written for teens by teens.

The meeting, for those ages 13 to 18 interested in the teen 'zine, will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow. Registration is not needed.

"Health Matters @ Your Library," a series of programs on healthful topics, will present "Tea for a Healthy and Happy Life" at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Miller branch.

Jay Wang, owner of Taimu Tea, will discuss the history, cultural traditions and spiritual and healing properties associated with tea. Registration is required.

Around Town

Scholarships -- Elkridge Adult Athletic Association is accepting applications for its 2007 scholarship program for high school seniors. Learning English -- The Miller branch library offers an English Conversation Club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.

Elkridge library -- The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, offers Games Night for those ages 11 to 17 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

A parent-child book club for those ages 11 to 17 with a parent will be offered from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month. Registration is not required.

Chess is available for those ages 11 to 17 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all skill levels are welcome but must know how to play. Registration is not necessary.

Help with homework will be available for those ages 11 to 14 at the library. Snacks will be provided, and registration is requested. 410-313-5077.

Mah-jongg -- Drop-in mah-jongg games are held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center. Admission is free.

A new duplicate bridge drop-in group meets from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays at the center. Coffee, tea and treats will be available. Admission is free. 410-313-7279.

Knitting for charity -- A community-service knitting and crocheting group meets to knit and crochet afghans, blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. High tea -- Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park will offer a Victorian Mother-Daughter high tea in the parlors of Mount Ida, the visitor center of the once-renowned girls school in Ellicott Mills -- now Ellicott City. The event will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 25. Hostesses in period dress will serve teas, sweets and savories. The halls and parlors display furnishings, art and garments appropriate to the girls' school. Basket bingo -- Hollifield Station Elementary School will hold its fourth basket bingo at 7 p.m. March 16 at the school, 8701 Stonehouse Drive, Ellicott City. Longaberger baskets will be filled with gourmet and specialty items. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance; $20 at the door. 410-313-2550.
