Aversatile senior guard-forward, Edgewood's Octavia Brown averages 10 points, five rebounds and 2.5 assists for the Rams (5-12). A third-year player, Brown also has outstanding ball-handling skills and can shoot the three-pointer, said her coach, Fred Hammett. Brown, 5 feet 8, carries a 3.8 grade point average and has decided to attend Division III Bridgewater College in Virginia, where she will continue to play basketball.

What do you think you do the best on the court?

Ball-handling. It comes naturally. I like to take the ball behind my back. It helps me get past people and excites the crowd.

How did you develop your ball-handling skills?

I basically taught myself. During the summertime, I carry the ball wherever I go. I mean, it was in the car while I went in places, like restaurants and stores.

Is it hard to stay motivated on a 5-12 team?

No, because I love the game. I've been playing since the third grade.

How did you choose Bridgewater?

They sent me the most information and a questionnaire asking me if I was interested in basketball. It wasn't like an official application. I sent back a schedule of our games.

What would be your ultimate dream in basketball?

Play in high school, play in college, and play in the WNBA. I like to play all positions. I take about five three-pointers a game, depending on how hot I am. One game I made five in a row and scored 19 points.

What has been the most important thing you've learned in three years on the varsity?

How well you practice is how well you're going to play. As long as it's there for you, you have to do it.

What's the best game you ever played?

Last year when we played against Aberdeen, I think I had 17 points, but I don't think I even started that game. We won. The most people show up for that game. We won both games against Aberdeen last year and lost the first game this season to them.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Watching the Maryland women play. They're my favorite team. I don't have any favorite men's teams.
