Workshops offered for firefighters

The Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute and University of Maryland, in partnership with Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, will conduct free regional Firefighters Grant Workshops for Maryland fire departments and Emergency Medical Services personnel.

The workshops are being held to assist fire departments in preparing successful Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program applications.

A workshop will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 20 at Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company Carnival Activities Building on Route 27 and Twin Arch Road.

The grants go toward firefighting equipment, personal protection equipment, training, vehicles and safety projects.

Registration is not required.

Fire company awarded $29,768

Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department has been awarded $29,768 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The fire company will use the grant to purchase an all-terrain vehicle to aid in rescue operations in remote areas with poor and hazardous road conditions that would otherwise be inaccessible to ambulances or brush trucks, said Bill Rehkopf, Sykesville-Freedom public information officer.

Child care center awarded grant

Carroll Child Care Centers Inc. will receive a one-time transitional grant from the United Way of Central Maryland, which had denied the centers' annual grant application last fall.

The transition grant gives the center a six-month cushion of funding support. The center needs to raise an additional six months funding for this year and then replace the total amount usually granted by United Way for 2008 and 2009.
