The South River boys won a close one, while the Severna Park girls romped to victory in the inaugural Anne Arundel County Swimming Championships at the Arundel Olympic Swim Center in Annapolis last night.

South River had to win the final event of the evening for the boys, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to best Severna Park, 98-94. Ryan Hanson, Justin Vagts, Chad Knipschild and Cort Jones won by nearly 10 seconds over Broadneck.

South River also captured the 200 freestyle relay with Alex Whitaker replacing Knipschild. Vagts, a sophomore, got the Hawks' only individual win, in the 200 freestyle.

Piling up 158 team points, Severna Park cruised to the girls title by 67 points over runner-up South River (91). The Falcons won all three relays and five individual gold medals in the 11-event meet.

Emily Lloyd and Jordan Gibbs were double winners for the Falcons, taking the events in which they were seeded No. 1. Lloyd won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Gibbs swept the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

Sara Lloyd, Emily's sister, took the 100 butterfly.

Senior Jamie Schmidt, who won the 50 freestyle and was third in the 100 breaststroke, swam her first two years of high school at Mount de Sales before transferring to North County last year.

"We didn't have a swimming team last year, but I have loved this whole season," said Schmidt, who also plays softball. "This is one of the greatest memories of my high school years, and I really think this is going to develop into a great program in the county."
