Zach First (125) and state champion Josh Asper (160) had two pins each, David Fouts (135) had a pin and a technical fall and Jeremy Keil (140) won by a technical fall and a decision as sixth-ranked Hereford (15-2) successfully defended its Class 2A-1A North region crown with wins over host No. 7 Owings Mills, 36-35, in the title bout, and over No. 10 Milford Mill, 35-30, in its semifinal.

Hereford qualified for the state dual semifinals tomorrow at New Town.

The Bulls' win over Milford Mill (17-5) avenged an earlier loss, with key victories coming from Sean Gunn (119), 14-8 over Adeleke Ibironkie, and freshman Taylor Gload (189), who scored a 3-2 upset over Millers senior Antonio Cheatham.

"There was a lot of pressure tonight because we had lost to Milford Mill, and Owings Mills is pretty much our rival," said Fouts, one of the Bulls' 10 underclassmen. Fouts came from behind to pin Owings Mills' Antoine Sankey. "Pretty much everybody got the pins we needed, and we pretty much stayed off our backs."

For Owings Mills (14-2), state runner-up Tony Mack (145) rose to 28-0 with his 17th and 18th pins of the year.

Class 4A-3A East -- Pins by state champ Greg Saumenig (125) and Justin Faithful (285), the latter in only 19 seconds, paced No. 4 Old Mill to a 56-10 win over host James M. Bennett in the championship final. The Patriots (13-3) also received a technical fall win by Tim Lobuglio (135). In a 47-15 semifinal rout of No. 14 Arundel (17-5), Old Mill won all but three of the 14 bouts. In its 38-36 semifinal loss to James M. Bennett, Bel Air (19-8) got a pin from Matt Cross (140), who is 30-1. Old Mill also qualified for the state dual semifinals tomorrow.

Class 2A-1A South -- Syd Boesche (215) scored a 3-1 upset of sixth-ranked Brian Nance, and host No. 5 Glenelg defeated Atholton, 39-27, in the title bout. Earlier, Glenelg's Brian Marcoux (119) scored a 6-0 victory over state champ Devon Gillett to spark a 37-28 semifinal victory that eliminated defending 2A-1A state champ Hammond. The Gladiators are a school-record 16-0 heading into the state dual finals.

Class 4A-3A North -- No. 8 North Carroll defeated Urbana, 39-19, in the title matchup, with an upset victory by Jeremy Seipp (119) over Spencer Strube highlighting a second consecutive region title for the host Panthers (16-0).lem.satterfield@baltsun.com
