Devon Gillett

Hammond, wrestling

The senior last week notched his seventh and eighth pins of the season and decisioned a third opponent to lead the defending 2A-1A state dual meet champion Bears into today's 2A-1A South regional dual-meet event at fifth-ranked Glenelg. Gillett, ranked No. 1 in The Sun at 119 pounds, on Thursday won his eighth consecutive match and his 12th of his past 13 with an 8-6 victory over Glenelg's Brian Marcoux. Gillett, who transferred from Arundel High after his sophomore year, has won titles at the tournaments for Anne Arundel and Howard counties the past two seasons as well as two straight regional crowns. Hammond is the defending 2A-1A South regional champion. Gillett is 31-4 and has a team-leading 72 takedowns this season. This past fall, Gillett was a regional runner-up and a fourth-place finisher at the 2A state cross country meet. Gillett will wrestle and run cross country at Newberry College starting in the fall.

Ashley Davis

Arundel, basketball

The 5-foot-9 sophomore shooting guard led the No. 4 Wildcats to two victories last week, keeping the defending county champions atop the Anne Arundel County standings. Davis scored 24 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter on 6-for-7 shooting from the field, in a 71-59 victory over then-No. 9 Old Mill, which had been unbeaten in the county. She also had four assists. In a 79-23 romp over Broadneck, she had 17 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. In her second season on the varsity, Davis averages 15.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Last summer, she helped her Amateur Athletic Union team, the Maryland Hurricanes, win the state 16-and-under championship and finish 24th at the national tournament. Davis has a 3.5 grade point average and plays volleyball for the Wildcats.
