Keene Lambert Gooding Jr., who retired as a chief of Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks after more than 40 years of service, died of cancer Friday at his home in Sykesville. He was 60.

Mr. Gooding was raised in Arbutus.

From the time he was a teenager, he held jobs with the Recreation Department, starting out with odd jobs, such as putting white chalk lines on ball fields. He worked his way up over the years and became chief of programming and services in 1987.

He had retired Wednesday.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

He is survived by his parents, Keene L. and Dorothy Mae Horn Gooding of Arbutus; his wife, Debbie Kerr Gooding; three sons, Kristopher, Michael and Jeffrey, all of Sykesville; and a brother, Steven Gooding of New Fairfield, Conn.
