Penguin Pace today to support seniors

Howard County Striders will sponsor its Penguin (5K) Pace at 7:45 a.m. today at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia. The cost is $30; proceeds help support programs for Howard County seniors at the Bain Center.

Awards will be given to the top two male and female finishers in seven age groups. Random prizes are also planned. Registration includes a Penguin Pace logo sweat shirt and a catered, sit-down brunch. catered by the Elkridge Furnace Inn. Arleen Dinneen, 410-313-7213 or

PJs party to benefit Success in Style

Baltimore's Best Party Entertainers, whose owner, Gia Magliano, serves on the board of Success in Style, will sponsor a benefit for the Howard County nonprofit organization from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Confetti's Event Center, 802 Gleneagles Court, Towson.

The networking party, "Professionals in PJs," includes hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer. Pajamas are requested but not required.

Success in Style provides free professional clothing and coaching to low-income women re-entering the work force.

Women's history essay contest set

The Howard County Commission for Women will sponsor an essay contest in honor of Women's History Month, celebrated next month.

The theme for this year's contest is "Generations of Women Moving History Forward." The competition is open to Howard County students in grades six to 12.

The essay should focus on an American woman and her ability to overcome obstacles, encourage dreams and bring communities together. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday.

Winners will be invited to read their essays at the Women's Hall of Fame induction ceremony at 7:30 p.m. March 15 in the Banneker Room of the George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City.

Job fair slated at Fort Meade

The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation and Fort Meade Morale, Welfare and Recreation will sponsor a Technical Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Club Meade, 6600 Mapes Road, Fort Meade.

More than 60 employers are seeking to fill 4,000 technical, communications and other positions. The fair is open to all. Admission is free.
