N.C. travel agency focus of probe

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office is participating in a multi-state investigation of a North Carolina-based travel agency that has allegedly bilked thousands of dollars from unwary victims, including at least 35 in Carroll County.

The Carroll residents have been defrauded of more than $115,000 by Southern Travel LLC, authorities said. Since early January, investigators have received more than 70 reports from victims in the Baltimore area. Many of the Carroll victims had purchased a seven-day vacation to Hawaii after attending a December 2006 presentation given by Southern Travel LLC's owner, Barbara Herrington, at the Westminster VFW, authorities said.

The trip, valued at $1,025, allegedly included airfare, a rental car, hotel room and a cruise aboard the Norwegian Cruise Ship, Pride of Hawaii. Anyone with information about the agency is asked to call 410-386-2900, or the Anonymous TIPS Hotline at 888-399-TIPP.
