Language, healing to be session topic

Tai Sophia Institute, 7750 Montpelier Road, North Laurel, will offer a workshop on the power of language and its influence on the healing process, led by the institute's co-founder and Chancellor Dianne M. Connelly.

"Medicine Words: Language of Love for the Treatment Room of Life" will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at Tai Sophia.

The cost is $25, and two continuing education units (CEUs) are available.

Parkinson Group to meet at hospital

Howard County General Hospital will hold the first meeting of its Parkinson Group at 10 a.m. Thursday in the hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation area.

The group, which is designed for people diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and their families and caregivers, will discuss speech and swallowing, voice therapy, nutrition, and exercise.

The hospital is offering weight training for seniors from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at Roger Carter Neighborhood Center in Ellicott City. The next 10-week session begins April 9.

The class includes warm-up, low-impact aerobics, circuit training to improve strength and cardiovascular health, and stretching. The cost is $7.50.

Walk-in flu clinic to be held Monday

The Howard County Health Department will hold its final walk-in flu immunization clinic at Columbia Health Center from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday. Flu shots will be available for $20; Medicare Part B is accepted.

FluMist will be available free to elementary school-aged children, ages 5 to 11, who have no health problems. Pneumococcal vaccine will also be available. The cost is $25; Medicare Part B will be accepted.

After Monday, flu vaccines will be available by appointment only.

The Columbia Health Center is at 7178 Columbia Gateway Drive, Columbia.

Classes, services

Aquatic fitness -- Aquatic fitness classes are offered by Central Maryland Rehabilitation Center at the Howard Community College pool. Sessions are held Monday and Friday afternoons. The cost is $6 a class. 410-312-9000.

Losing weight -- Individualized weight-loss counseling with a registered dietitian is offered by Howard County General Hospital between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the hospital. Appointments, which cost $25 for a half-hour visit, must be scheduled in advance. 410-740- 7601.

Gentle yoga -- Yoga Center of Columbia is holding gentle-yoga classes for seniors from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, through Feb. 15, at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. The classes emphasize breathing and stress reduction and will be adapted to the needs of the students. All levels of experience are welcome. The cost for a six-week session is $78; $15 to drop in. Columbia Association lien payers can request a 10 percent discount. Registration is required. 410-730-3987.

Qi gong -- Wilde Lake Community Association will sponsor a 10-week session of qi gong classes, taught by Karl Ardo of Moving in Stillness LLC, at 9:30 a.m. Saturdays, tomorrow through March 10, at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. The movements of the discipline are appropriate for all age groups and for the physically challenged. The cost is $150; $17 to drop in. Senior citizens pay $130.
