Annapolis senior Zack Gassman is a team captain and first-time starter for the Panthers basketball team and is a starting defenseman in lacrosse. He is averaging 7.3 rebounds and 10 points per game. Gassman, 6 feet 4 and 185 pounds, had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the Panthers' 71-70 victory over then-No. 4 Broadneck last week that ended the Bruins' school-record 15-game winning streak and gave coach John Brady his 621st career win to tie the all-time metro-area record.

What was it like knocking off Broadneck last week?

It was really big, and we did it in front of definitely the biggest crowd we've had in my time at Annapolis. There was really a lot of school spirit and it was great to get it for Coach Brady and give Broadneck their first loss.

With the win, your team went to 12-3. What's the season been like?

It's been a lot of fun, been a blast. I was a little surprised Coach Brady made me a team captain with Lateef Williams because I wasn't a starter last season, but he showed he has a lot of faith in me. I've surprised myself with the way I have been playing, and the Broadneck win should give us a lot of momentum and carry us in the playoffs.

Which sport will you play in college?

Definitely lacrosse, but if I end up at a big school, I might have to make it as a walk-on. I've applied at Penn State, Yale, Bucknell, Lafayette, Virginia, Maryland, Michigan and Georgia Tech. I want to major in engineering and that will play a big part of my decision.

How is the Panthers lacrosse team going to be this spring?

We will be one of the top three teams in the county. We only lost two starting seniors and have a solid crew returning.

How are you doing academically?

I have a 4.2 GPA and am a member of the International Baccalaureate program, which is becoming a pretty popular program. You take a placement test and enter as a ninth-grader with the actual program starting in 11th grade. Students in the program have college acceptance rates a lot higher. I'm also in the National Honor Society and am a freshman mentor.

What else do you do?

I play guitar - been playing for about for four years. I play old rock like Led Zeppelin and [Jimi] Hendrix.
