Speakout

THE ISSUE: -- What are some of the things you like about the Howard County Library system -- for instance, last week the central library unveiled a new health information collection -- and what ideas do you have to make it better? How to make an already great library even better?

Longer library hours suggested

One suggestion is longer Friday/Saturday hours and no seasonal Sunday closings.

Longer hours increase operating costs, and my suggestion is to operate extended hours on a different staffing model. During "regular" library hours, all services would be staffed. But during extended hours, the library would be more of a self-service operation, without personnel at information desks and other support services (except check-out).

This would provide residents with expanded access to library facilities and collections without adding the full operating cost to the library budget.
