Conexiones to partner with Guilford Elementary

Hispanic children at Guilford Elementary School will be offered academic support and additional encouragement through a new partnership between the school and Conexiones Inc.

The partnership is to include the establishment of an after-school homework club, with bilingual tutors to be provided by Conexiones. The organization will also offer evening information sessions in Spanish and English for the children's parents and guardians.

The partnership will be launched at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the school, 7335 Oakland Mills Road, when Conexiones President Murray Simon will join Principal Genee Varlack, Assistant Principal Anne Swartz, school board member Patricia S. Gordon and others to sign an official partnership agreement.

Conexiones Inc. has worked since 2000 to promote academic achievement among Hispanic children in Howard County.

Library to hold Musical Lock-in

The east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will hold a Musical Lock-In from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Feb. 9. for youth ages 11 to 14.

Hip-hop, rock and other music will be provided. Participants can learn to play a tune on the didgeridoo and take part in a musical scavenger hunt and games.

Beginning bridge -- "Bridge for the Absolute Beginner" will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. The six-week class costs $60, plus $5 for a textbook. A drop-in bridge program is offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the same location. Players at all levels are welcome. Mentoring is available. Children's concert -- Lively Arts for Little Ones! - a series of performances for children ages 2 to 5 and their chaperones - will present Tracey Eldridge with Music "N" Motion on Friday at The Other Barn in Oakland Mills. Performances, which include music, movement and riddles, will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $4.50 for ages 2 and older; groups rates are available. 410-730-4610.

La Leche to meet -- La Leche of Columbia will meet at 10 a.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at Owen Brown Community Center. The group offers support and guidance to breast-feeding mothers. How to succeed -- Long Reach Community Association will offer a six-week session of classes for boys and girls, ages 8 to 13, in etiquette, social skills and manners. The classes are presented by Stepping Out and meet from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturdays, Feb. 10 to March 17, at Stonehouse in Long Reach Village Center, 8775 Cloudleap Court. Registration is open until Feb. 17. The cost is $150 for six weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property.

Also offered are Ballet with Cindee Velle for children ages 3 and older and adults, through March 24. Classes include "First Steps," "Pre-ballet," "Combination Classes" and "Classical Ballet" as well as jazz, tap, pointe, hip-hop and modern dance.

Belly-dancing for adults is offered through March 12. Beginners will meet from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.; advanced class from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $64 for eight weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property. 410-730-8113.
