ELEANOR MCGOVERN, 85 wife of presidential candidate

Eleanor McGovern, the wife of former Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. George S. McGovern, died yesterday, according to a Mitchell, S.D., funeral home.

Mrs. McGovern had suffered heart problems for five years and underwent bypass surgery last year, but the cause of her death was not given by the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Mr. McGovern, 84, represented South Dakota in the House of Representatives from 1957 to 1961 and in the Senate from 1963 to 1981. He was the 1972 Democratic presidential nominee, losing 49 states to Republican Richard M. Nixon.

Mrs. McGovern campaigned for her husband across the country and appeared frequently on TV and radio programs on national and international issues.

The former Eleanor Stegeberg was born in Woonsocket, S.D. She was introduced to her future husband when her debate team defeated Mr. McGovern's team while he was a student at Mitchell High School.

Her memoir, Uphill: A Personal Story, was published in 1973.

A funeral service is planned for tomorrow in Mitchell.

Besides her husband, Mrs. McGovern is survived by four children.
