A 61-year-old Ellicott City woman was in critical but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore yesterday after she was struck by a car as she tried to cross busy U.S. 40 after dark Wednesday.

Carol Anne Bowen of the 3300 block N. Chatham Road was hit at 6:37 p.m. just east of Plum Tree Drive as she tried to cross the highway while wearing dark clothing and without using a crosswalk or at an intersection, Howard County police said.

She was flown to Shock Trauma by a state police helicopter.

Police are investigating, but a spokesman said no charges are likely against the driver of the westbound Honda Accord that hit the woman.
