Taylor Wieczorek is an exceptional rebounder for Severn School, averaging 10 per game for coach Chuck Miller. The 5-foot-11 junior, who is in her third year on varsity, averages 10.5 points per game and has had four consecutive double doubles (six for the season). The Kent Island resident has a 40-minute commute.

Living on the Eastern Shore, how did you end up at Severn?

Coach Miller came over and saw me in eighth grade and recruited me to come to Severn. My older brother, Adam, who is now at the University of Arizona, where most of our family is from, played football and golf at Severn.

Is the University of Arizona in your plans?

Yes, but it's Division I, and that could be difficult. My mom played volleyball there. If I am offered a scholarship somewhere else, I might change my mind about Arizona.

How tough is your daily commute?

It makes for a long day because school starts at 7:45 a.m. each day and I stay after for basketball, but I've gotten used to it and just got my driver's license this week and won't have to rely on my mom or dad driving me. It's well worth it.

Is Severn everything you expected it to be?

Absolutely. I'm very happy there. I like that it's small and we get a lot of one-on-one attention from the teachers. And our coaches are great.

What kind of team do you have this season?

We have a lot of young players, and as the year goes on they should get better by the [Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryand B Conference] playoffs. We have good chemistry and are really very close as a team.

What do you do best on the court?

Rebound. I'm very aggressive and I read well and get good position. I need to work on my shooting in order to play in college.

What do you plan to study in college?

I'm looking at pre-med or business. I like working with people. I help my mom with parties she throws. She sells medical supplies and I help her set up parties, do decorations and cook. And my interest in business comes from my father, who owns a trucking company.

What other interests do you have?

I enjoy writing short stories. I like doing papers in school, especially when the emphasis is on creativity.
