College basketball State Men This Week

January 22, 2007|By Paul McMullen

Coppin State (3-15, 1-5).

Coming up / / South Carolina State at Coppin Center tonight (7:30); at Howard on Saturday (4 p.m.).

Comment / / The undersized Eagles out-rebounded North Carolina A&T, but made just five of 28 three-pointers and extended their worst start in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in five years.

Loyola (11-7, 7-1)

Coming up / / Manhattan at Reitz Arena on Wednesday (7 p.m.); at Iona on Saturday (3:30 p.m.).

Comment / / Marquis Sullivan made a credible 36 percent of his three-pointers as a freshman. Heading into yesterday's win at Rider, he had raised that mark to 44.9, third in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Maryland (15-5, 1-4)

Coming up / / Georgia Tech at Comcast Center on Wednesday (9 p.m.).

Comment / / The Terps have won four straight against Georgia Tech, which has won once in College Park since 1994.

Morgan State (5-11, 3-3)

Coming up / / North Carolina A&T at Hill Field House tonight (7:30 p.m.); UMES at Hill Field House Saturday (4 p.m.)

Comment / / Winless at this time a year ago, the Bears have already exceeded last season's win total. Since an 0-6 start, they've played .500 ball for first-year coach Todd Bozeman.

Mount St. Mary's (6-13, 5-3)

Coming up / / Wagner at Knott Arena on Thursday (7 p.m.); Fairleigh Dickinson at Knott Arena on Saturday (7 p.m.).

Comment / / An overtime loss at Robert Morris, where senior guard Mychal Kearse scored a career-high 21 points, kept the Mountaineers from a sweep of their two-game Northeast Conference road trip in western Pennsylvania.

Navy (11-9, 1-4)

Coming up / / at American on Wednesday (8 p.m.); Colgate at Alumni Hall on Saturday (3:30).

Comment / / Yesterday's Star Game loss at West Point was doubly painful, as the Mids still have only one win in Patriot League play. Junior wing Greg Sprink has made a state-best 89.7 percent of his free throws.

Towson (9-10, 3-5)

Coming up / / Delaware at Towson Center on Wednesday (7 p.m.); Hofstra at Towson Center on Saturday (4 p.m.).

Comment / / Dennard Abraham, a 6-8 senior from Reisterstown, scored 46 points in a 2-1 week that included a rout of UNC Wilmington.

UMBC (7-13, 3-4)

Coming up / / New Hampshire at RAC Arena on Thursday (7 p.m.); Binghamton at RAC Arena on Sunday (4 p.m.).

Comment / / The Retrievers prosper inside the arc. Before yesterday's loss at Boston University, they were second in both free-throw and field-goal percentage in the America East, but last in defending three-pointers (.408) and seventh shooting them (.325).

UMES (3-15, 0-6)

Coming up / / Bethune-Cookman tonight at Hytche Center (7:30); at Morgan State on Saturday (4 p.m.).

Comment / / The Hawks are the only winless team in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. They could rectify that tonight, as Bethune-Cookman is 1-6 in conference games.
