Long Reach classes teach kids etiquette and manners

The Long Reach Community Association will offer a six-week session of classes for boys and girls, ages 8 to 13, in etiquette, social skills and manners. The classes, presented by Stepping Out, are focused on creating self-confidence and comfort in social situations.

Classes meet from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturdays, Feb. 10 to March 17, at Stonehouse in Long Reach Village Center, 8775 Cloudleap Court. Registration is open until Feb. 17.

The cost is $150 for six weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property.

Also offered are Ballet with Cindee Velle for children ages 3 and older and adults, through March 24. "First Steps," "Pre-ballet," "Combination Classes" and "Classical Ballet" as well as jazz, tap, pointe, hip-hop and modern dance.

Belly-dancing for adults is offered through March 12. Beginners will meet from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.; advanced class from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $64 for eight weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property.

Music program for children

Lively Arts For Little Ones! - a series of performances for children ages 2 to 5 and their chaperones - will present Tracey Eldridge with Music "N" Motion on Feb. 2 at The Other Barn in Oakland Mills.

Performances, which include music, movement, riddles and rhyming, will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $4.50 for ages 2 and older; groups rates are available.

Around Town

Mothers to meet -- Mommy and Me Cafe, a drop-in program for mothers, grandmothers and children, will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. tomorrow at the east Columbia library. The program offers mothers an opportunity to meet and mingle with other parents while children play. It is sponsored by La Leche of Columbia, a chapter of the international organization that offers information, guidance and support to breastfeeding mothers. 410-309-4940 or 410- 461-3423.

Beginning bridge -- "Bridge for the Absolute Beginner" will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. The six-week class costs $60, plus $5 for a textbook. A drop-in bridge program is offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the same location. Players at all levels are welcome. Mentoring is available. Lessons in mah-jongg are also offered at the center. The cost is $31 for three classes, after which students will be qualified to play. Registration is required. 410-290-5430.

Children's classes -- Kings Contrivance Community Association is offering "Itsy Bitsy Yoga," a Saturday program for parents and babies ages 3 weeks and older, taught by Linda Dobry. The class meets from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The cost is $69; $75 for nonresidents. Judy Milke leads parent-and-child classes for children ages 14 months to 4 years. Classes are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, depending on the age of the child. A new "Kidzart" class for ages 6 to 9 will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, starting Saturday. 410-381-9600.
