Four young men with a creative take on the world and an altruistic urge to upgrade menswear in Baltimore. That's the foundation for BU Men's Boutique, where customers will find sharp clothing, provocative art and a soundtrack that ranges from John Coltrane to the Ebony Rhythm Band to African artist Fela Kuti.

Friends Aaron Greene, Raza Ojeda, Kevin Anderson and Carlos Brown opened BU last month in a townhouse space that they hope will become as much a gathering spot as a shopping destination.

BU is designed to encourage visitors to have a "more open mind" when it comes to music, art and fashion, Ojeda says. That means pushing Baltimore men a bit beyond their sartorial comfort zone. In their buying expeditions, BU's partners seek "labels people aren't going to know," Greene says. They have discovered any number of classy variations on T-shirts ($20 to $40) and jeans ($100 to $170). Ultra-cool, distressed leather belts by Leather Island range from $50 to $70, and an ultra-cozy Brown Sound sweater is $120.
