A Montgomery County police officer shot and killed a teenage suspect at a park-and-ride lot in Burtonsville yesterday after the youth allegedly approached another officer and shot him in the shoulder and head.

The injured officer, Detective D.H. Oaks, was flown to an area hospital, where he was listed in fair condition late yesterday, said police spokeswoman Lucille Baur.

The two officers were conducting an undercover narcotics operation when a teenage boy approached one of them and opened fire, according to Baur. An officer providing backup returned fire, fatally shooting the boy in the upper torso.

The incident happened about 2 p.m. at Greencastle Road and Tirbridge Drive. A second suspect tried to flee but was arrested, police said.

The dead teen has been identified, but police are withholdinng his name until family members can be contacted. The other suspect's name has not been released.
