Whole-foods workshop planned

Tai Sophia Institute, 7750 Montpelier Road, North Laurel, will offer "Whole Food Nutrition in Life and in Clinical Practice," a one-day workshop exploring the science, principles and benefits of a whole-foods diet.

Dr. Susan Lord, adjunct professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine, associate director of professional education and director of nutrition programs for the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, will discuss psychological and emotional relationships with food, ways to eat "mindfully" and ways to teach mindful eating.

Lord conducts a weeklong training program in clinical nutrition for health care professionals, "Food as Medicine," at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine.

The workshop, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 24 at the institute, is designed for health care practitioners and lay people. The cost is $125; 6.5 continuing education credits are available.

Tai Sophia Institute offers master's degrees in acupuncture, herbal medicine and the applied healing arts, as well as community-based educational programs.

Prenatal class scheduled for Jan. 31

Howard County General Hospital will offer a prenatal class for parents-to-be in the first three months of pregnancy. The class will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 31 at the hospital's Wellness Center, Suite L-9 of the Columbia Medical Center, 11055 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

Flu vaccinations -- Howard County Health Department says there is time to be vaccinated against the flu. The flu season runs from October through mid-March. Doses of vaccine are available for all those who have not been immunized. To schedule an appointment to receive the vaccine, call:

Affordable care -- Chase Brexton Health Services Inc. has opened its third Maryland site at 5500 Knoll North Drive in Oakland Mills village. The center plans to provide insured, uninsured and underinsured children and adults with primary and preventive care, and mental health and case-management services. It will be the first Chase Brexton location to offer consultations in integrative medicine, combining conventional and complementary therapies. Dental care, substance-abuse services and an on-site pharmacy are also planned. Fees are on a sliding scale, and help is available with state and federal assistance programs. Aquatic fitness -- Aquatic fitness classes are offered by the Central Maryland Rehabilitation Center at the Howard Community College pool. Sessions are held Monday and Friday afternoons. The cost is $5 a class. 410-312-9000.
