The Savage Volunteer Fire Company has received $58,540 in federal funding for new gear and a specialized washer and dryer to clean the equipment, U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski announced yesterday.

Among the pieces of equipment is a respiratory fit test machine, which checks whether a mask fits a firefighter correctly and doesn't leak around the eyes, nose or chin, according to an occupational safety Web site.

This is the second award for the Savage Volunteer Fire Company from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

In 2003, the department was awarded $225,000 to purchase a new fire engine.
